The name, Kill the Buddha, was inspired from reading Shunryu Suzuki’s, “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind”. For those not familiar with the teaching, my basic understanding translates to; the moment you think you’re enlightened in any way, you need to kill that idea. It’s about grasping impermanence. I believe to fully experience something, you need to let go of your ideas about that which you seek. I’ve been inspired by too many to name, but I’ll try. The Books, Broken Social Scene, Timber Timbre, Robbie Basho, Big Thief, Nina Simone, Deerhoof, Hayley Heynderickx, The Grateful Dead, Grizzly Bear. I saw Daniel Rossen live in Asheville, NC in the Spring of 2022. That experience changed my life and helped to forge my initial musical direction for this project. It keeps changing in the best ways.

Ins Kino is the musical project of Raleigh, N.C.-based songwriter, Evan Farkas. Since 2019, Farkas has released two EP’s under the Ins Kino name and curated his music into a dynamic live act, playing solo as well as in variations of a four-piece composed of himself and Triangle stalwarts Kenny Florence (Annuals, Sunfold), Thomas McNeely (Jenny Besetzt, Cor de Lux), and Mike Robinson (Annuals, Sunfold, Lonnie Walker). Unique, layered, and stylish, Ins Kino’s melodies are reminiscent of the Great American Songbook, blended with chamber pop flourishes and punchy, understated percussion.
