Dreamroot / SMYA

Dreamroot, a band from Durham, NC, is composed of core members Theous Jones (drums), Joe MacPhail (keys), and Ittai Korman (bass). Their instrumental music navigates between genres, creating an eclectic and improvisational sound that Indy Week has praised as “one of the distinctive strains of the Durham Jazz Scene.” Their latest album, “Push,” marks the first release by the current trio iteration, exploring new sounds and textures.

Triangle-based jazz collective SMYA (pronounced ‘suh – MY – uh’) is an ensemble working to innovate, in part through the synthesis of wildly varied musical traditions. Indian Carnatic music becomes the older sister of hip-hop and RnB; pop and spiritual music lifts jazz foundations to unfamiliar heights; and video game-inspired soundtracks come alive on acoustic instruments.
