Memphis band
Optic Sink steps beyond their Southern rock roots, past their many uber-predictable post-punk contemporaries, and into a void all their own with their latest,
Lucky Number. Here, Optic Sink creates something wholly new and original, building a sound of their own outside the framework of the modern post-punk trap. Where most modern post-punk bands channel—or worse, lazily copy—big names like Devo,
Joy Division,
the Slits, and so on, Optic Sync takes inspiration from cult heroes such as
Lizzy Mercier Descloux,
Grauzone, and
Suicide. Using programmed drums, synths, and modulated guitars and vocals, the group meticulously build ultra-catchy, danceable, dark pop songs. Their songwriting and lyrics are shadowy and sterile, while in contrast, their sequences really boogie—a duality that yields deliciously mangled, multifaceted results.
