G-Clef’s Graduation Celebration + Film Screening
Local superstar Grace Nichols, aka G-Clef, will share two films they worked on while earning an MFA in Dramatic Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. A cultural organizer for over ten years, they pursued this degree to enhance their storytelling capability in the service of liberation for our communities. Their work seeks to disrupt dominant narratives around race, gender, and adoption, utilizing heartfelt humor, fun-loving drag sensibilities, and sexy mischief-making to make, as Toni Cade Bambara says, the revolution as irresistible as possible. They will share an animated short film called FULL CIRCLE: an expression of transracial adoption through shapes, and a love letter to adoptees everywhere. They will also present a live script reading of Hall Pass, the story of two former lovers meeting up Durham’s favorite queer dive bar (*ahem* The Pinhook) after an unresolved breakup, one gender transition, and years of not speaking. Please join them from 2:30 – 5 on Sunday, Feb. 22nd at the Pinhook in celebration of their MFA accomplishments.
Sound System Culture: MIRA MIRA presents a clinic in sound
MIRA MIRA will present a free clinic at the Pinhook in Durham on 12/19 prior to their headlining appearance at BLENDR that night. Their clinic, entitled “Sound System Culture,” will explore the birth of sound system culture in Kingston, Jamaica. By following the migration paths of this culture, participants will learn how modern club design, raves, and block parties are informed and developed. This clinic directly relates to MIRA MIRA’s craft as a DJ, producer, sound engineer, and organizer, and speaks to their connection to sound system culture in terms of spaces they are involved in, such as the Karlala sound system.
